5 Articles to Promote Thought, Encourage Reflection and Ignite Action

  1. Edgar Schein is Sloan Professor of Management Emeritus at the Sloan School of Management at the MIT. You will likely be familiar with the 3 levels of culture identified by Schein as artifacts, beliefs and values, and underlying assumptions. This introductory article from The Hypertextual, explores Schein’s work on Organisational Culture and Leadership.

  2. The Hypertextual did a follow up post to the above focusing in on Schein’s Organisational Learning. Here, they unpack the 10 Dimensions of a Learning Culture and a Learning Leader, which are critical for companies to survive in today’s economy.

  3. You know the team at Google HQ have a bit of sway in the market when they bring in the world’s most influential thinkers, creators, makers and doers all in one place in their own Talks at Google. In this ‘fireside chat’ Schein discuses his latest project around Humble Leadership with Google VP of People Development Karen May.

  4. Schein’s latest book, Humble Leadership, introduce a new model of leadership based on personal relationships. Skip Richards shares insights from a conversation with Schein and Schein (his son Peter) in The Power of Relationships, Openness, and Trust.

  5. A final double-shot of Schein comes from Dr Todd Conklin’s PreAccident Investigation Podcast! In this two-part-Pod, Conklin shares a recording of Schein and Schein, which is a great listen. I strongly recommend you listen to PAPod 238 and PAPod 239 back to back, and then listen to it again. There’s so many great nuggets of wisdom here.

#SafeWaterSeptember

Because this is the September update, I want to also let you know about a cause I’m supporting this month - Safe Water September.

I take a lot of things for granted, and I am privileged to live in a country like Australia where I have access to good education healthcare and fresh clean water. But access to clean water shouldn't just be for people like me - every person deserves access to safe water.

Unfortunately, 1.1 Billion (~11%) people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. That's a number that needs to change, and to help, I'll be changing my habits for 30 days in support of Safe Water September. I'll be giving up my coffees, soft drink and other beverages for the entire month, and donating what I'd normally spend at my local cafes or corner stores to the Safe Water September cause.

You can join me in bringing clean, safe drinking water to those who need it most by supporting Safe Water September at www.timall.red/safewater
